Premium Server At-A-Glance

As the need to share files among co-workers becomes a more integral part of daily workflow, many departments are considering the purchase of a file server. The costs for hardware, software, and staff to administer and maintain the server make the purchase of a file server an expensive proposition. As an alternative to purchasing a departmental server, ITC has developed a Windows 2003-based file server service for departments.

The Premium Server Service offers space on a Windows 2003 file server to departments at a reasonable cost. Please see the ITC disk rate page. The cost of the necessary hardware, software, and staff time to administer and maintain the server is included in the annual fee. Additional costs include one-time cost for Windows 2003 Client Access Licenses available for $6.36 per client (please check the current pricing as Microsoft Select prices change on a quarterly basis), and a small set up fee, usually 1 to 2 hours, charged at the current Micro Systems consulting rate.

The Service provides departments with shared workspace and provides individuals with their own secure directories. Departments may have unique login scripts, choose drive mappings, and customize their common directories. The option to assign one of their staff to locally administer their shared directories is also possible.

Benefits of the Premium Server Service include:

  • ITC provides daily backups of all data on the server.
  • ITC's Microsystems group has significant experience with Windows 2003 and will be maintaining the server.
  • The Service is compatible with common desktop operating systems in use at U.Va., including Windows 2000, XP and Macintosh OS X.
  • Premium Server offers departments a secure and cost-effective alternative to purchasing and maintaining their own file server.
