Joining the Eservices Domain

Windows XP Professional

There are two types of accounts that need to be set up in order for your Windows XP Professional to join the ESERVICES domain:  a user account and a computer account.  The user account is your UVA computing ID; you would not be able to access any machines on the network without it.  The computer account is different – think of it as a membership card for the domain you are trying to join.  If your workstation does not have a computer account in the Eservices domain, you will not be able to access any of the domain’s resources.

ITC Micro Systems handles the creation of user and computer accounts for the Eservices domain. To request these accounts, please send an e-mail message to:    itc-microsystems@virginia.edu.

Windows 2000 Premium Server clients should follow these instructions to configure their workstations to join the ESERVICES domain:

Set the Computer Name

  • Log onto the Windows XP workstation using the computer’s local administrator account.
  • Click on the Start button and then click on Control Panel.
  • After the Control Panel screen appears, double click on the System icon (as shown below).

  • Next, the System Properties screen is displayed. Click on the Computer Name tab. Click on the Change button. The Computer Name Changes screen is displayed (as shown below).

  • In the Computer name box, type in the name for this workstation. To ensure that the Computer name is unique, use your computing ID and then add “w2k” to the end.

·        Once the computer name has been entered, click on the More button.

·        In the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box, enter:  eservices.virginia.edu

  • Select the box next to Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes.
  • Click the OK button two times. A prompt is displayed that warns that a reboot is required.
  • Click OK twice, then select No.  The PC will be rebooted later.

Install the Microsoft Client, File Sharing and TCP/IP Protocol

  • If you accidentally rebooted the machine in the previous section, log onto the workstation using the local administrator account.
  • Click on Start, click Control Panel.
  • Double click on the Network Connections icon.
  • Double click on the Local Area Connection icon.
  • Click on the Properties button in the Local Area Connection Status screen.

  • The Local Area Connection Properties screen is displayed (as shown below).

  • Three components need to be installed:

- Client for Microsoft Networks

- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

If all three components are present (as shown in the previous figure), please skip to the next section (Add WINS Settings).

  • If the client is not listed, click on the Install button, double-click on Client and then select Client for Microsoft Networks.  Click on the OK Button.
  • If File and Printer Sharing is not listed, click on the Install button.  Double-click on Service.  Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.  Click the OK button.

  • Deselect the check box next to Register this connection’s addresses in DNS.
  • Close out of all open screens by selecting OK twice.  Then click Close twice.

Copy the User Profile settings

If this workstation has never been used, then it does not contain an existing user profile.  For new or unused workstations, please skip to the next section (Joining the Eservices Domain).

This section is only needed if the W2K workstation has been used previously and there are settings in an existing profile need to be copied.  When the profile is copied, your personal settings (such as display resolution/color depth, icon placement and favorites) will be saved when you join the workstation to the Eservices domain.  This is accomplished by copying the existing profile to Default User profile.

  • Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  • Double click System.
  • Click the User Profiles tab (this may take a few moments).
  • Click your existing user profile. The profile name is the same as the local ID used to log into the workstation.
  • Click Copy to, then Browse.
  • Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\ (double click C:, then Documents and Settings folder).
  • Click the Default User directory.
  • Click OK (twice).
  • Click Yes to close the Confirm Copy dialog box.
  • Click OK to close the System Properties screen.
  • Your original profile will now be copied to the Default user.  This may take a few moments.
  • Once the disk is finished writing the information, reboot your machine and log back in as Administrator to the local machine.

Joining the Eservices domain

  • Select Start, Settings, Control Panel and double click the System icon.
  • Select the Network Identification tab and click on the Properties button.
  • The Identification Changes screen is displayed (as shown below).

  • Click on the Domain radio button.  Enter the following text into the Domain field:

eservices.virginia.edu

  • Click the OK button.
  • Next, you are prompted to enter your domain Name and Password.
  • Enter the ID and password that was set up for you on the Eservices domain.
  • Click OK when done.

  • When your workstation joins the Eservices domain, a welcome message is displayed (as shown below).  This may take a minute or so.
  • Click OK to clear this message.

  • You will be prompted to reboot your computer.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK a second time to close the System Properties dialog box.
  • Click Yes to restart your computer.

Adding your Domain ID to the Local Administrators Group

  • Log on to the machine using the local Administrator account.
  • Go to the Start menu, select Run.
  • The Run dialog box is displayed, in the Open box, type: cmd.
  • Click on OK.  A command console window will appear.
  • Type the following line exactly as it appears here into the console window, replacing [your user id] with your own Eservices Domain ID:

net  localgroup  administrators  eservices\[your user id]   /add

  • For example, if your user account is mst3k, you would enter:

net  localgroup  administrators  eservices\mst3k  /add

  • Windows 2000 should report the successful execution of the command.  If it does not, it is possible that you mistyped the line.
  • If successful, type exit at the console prompt.  The window will close.
  • Reboot your machine.
  • Log in to the Eservices domain with your network ID [i.e. mst3k]
